What Are The Requirements?

For starters, it helps to know that your pet will most likely need an original health certificate from a licensed and accredited veterinarian (under ten days of intended travel). Another thing that a shipper may require is a signed rabies vaccination certificate.

Requirements may also vary, depending on your destination of travel. Some may require annual vaccination records, import permits, quarantine kennels, reservations, and other documentation that can take quite some time to complete or gather. This is why it’s always best to start prioritizing the said requirements days before your trip. After all, animal transportation is no easy task, so a tad bit of patience is recommended!

In terms of carrier cases or kennels, there are certain standards to be met. Additionally, it helps to know that there are some airlines that only accept live animal shipments that came from professional shippers.

What Are My Options?

Good question!

First off, you can easily ship your dog by car if the situation allows it. One thing you’ll be needing is a crash-rated travel crate, just so you can ensure the safety of your pet. After all, it’s your main responsibility to keep your four-legged friend safe and comfortable! A car is also a decent form of ground transport, as it gives you more control and enables your dog to have a sense of companionship during the trip. Just be sure to bring any sort of documents you can in case of emergencies.

Another option is ground shipping companies. These are great alternatives for air travel, as they are cheaper, and are great for short-distance shipping.

If you have the budget for it, you can also opt for air travel.

Air travel for a dog can be via three options: in the airplane cabin, in the same plane with you but in the cargo area, or in another plane’s cargo area. Prices will also vary depending on the size of the crate.

Other Things You Should Know

A dog has other requirements and needs. Aside from the safety and proper handling, dogs also need to have a decent food intake, as well as exercise. For short distance travels, treats can be a decent alternative. Breaks are important, and it’s crucial that their needs are met, as some dogs tend to be anxious during long trips.

For the rate of shipping your dog, the average amount to ship a pet within a distance of 300 miles is $120 to $250. As always, rates may vary depending on the services you will avail of.

The Wrap Up

And there we have it! We hope this feature was able to help you out in deciding what’s best for you and your dog with regard to shipping and transportation. At the end of the day, it’s important to ensure that the pet transport services you will avail of will provide safety, comfort, and value for your shipping needs.

One of Becky's favourite things to do every morning is to browse the top pet-related forums, looking for issues and questions that people have. She then shortlists the most common ones, and turns them into blog posts for Fuzzy Rescue. She's had over 4 cats and 2 dogs over the past decade, so she does know a thing or 2 about raising/training, and more importantly, loving them. She's the only one on our team that doesn't like coffee, but it seems to us she really doesn't need more energy :). We're very fortunate to have her on board as she does most of the heavy listing for the site, outputting an insane amount of content each month. Read More
